While effective and even life-saving for so many, the unwanted side effects can be extremely troubling. One common and often upsetting side effect with use is weight gain from antidepressants. This includes treatment with classes of antidepressants known as SSRIs (like Prozac (fluoxetine), TCAs, and MAOIs. Causes There are a few theories about why weight gain occurs with antidepressant use, but no concrete conclusions. Some theories blame the antidepressantâs effect on metabolism or appetite.?? Many people taking antidepressants report feeling increased hunger and intense cravings for sugar-rich foods. Some deny eating more but still experience weight gain. So, what can you do? Talk to Your Doctor and Make Sure He or She Is Listening With safety and effectiveness so well-established, psychiatrists and primary care physicians have become comfortable prescribing antidepressants to their patients. Unfortunately, not all are as comfortable in treating the unwanted side effects. If you experience weight gain while on antidepressants, it is important that you have a candid conversation with your prescriber. Equally important is that you feel your prescriber understands your concerns and is willing to work with you to develop a plan of action. Healthcare providers are not all equal when it comes to dealing with antidepressant side effects. For example, you might voice your concerns about gaining thirty pounds to your psychiatrist. Youve been on three antidepressants previously to treat your panic disorder, but the current one works best to control your panic symptoms. Your doctor asks this question: What do you want to beâ"panic free or in shape? This, of course, is probably not what you expect to hear, and you might leave the office feeling humiliated. If you donât believe your doctor is taking your concerns about weight gain seriously, it may be time to get a second opinion. Ask Your Doctor About Switching Medications Some antidepressants appear to encourage more weight gain than others. For example, Paxil (paroxetine) is believed to be the SSRI most likely to cause weight gain.?? We are all wired differently. An antidepressant that works well for one person may not be as effective for another. The same can be said for side effects. Switching from one antidepressant to another may provide adequate symptom control without the weight gain. How Antidepressants Can Affect Weight Loss Get a Complete Medical Checkup Sometimes weight gain after antidepressant therapy is presumed to be a side effect, but it may be related to an underlying medical condition. For example, an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), is a common medical condition that can cause weight gain among other symptoms. If youâre experiencing weight gain while on antidepressant therapy, it may be worth getting a complete physical. Consider Diet and Exercise as Part of Your Treatment Many professionals believe that giving into sugar cravings only leads to increased appetite and weight gain. There is some research that shows proper proportions of proteins (i.e., lean meat, fish), carbohydrates (i.e., fruits, beans, whole grains, and vegetables) and good fats (i.e., olive oil, canola oil) can reduce food cravings and hasten weight loss.?? Dr. Hedaya proposes that eliminating sugars, refined flour, caffeine, chocolate, and alcohol from your diet will not only help your energy level and mood but will also allow your antidepressants to work better.?? From better heart function to improved mood, exercise has vast benefits for both mind and body. And, it doesnât have to be intensive to be beneficial. Studies show even a little exercise can produce good benefits.?? Your dietary needs or ability to participate in an exercise program may be affected by your physical fitness or by certain medical conditions. Before beginning any diet or exercise plan, you should talk to your healthcare provider. Why SSRIs Cause Weight Gain and What You Can Do About It

Insights Into the Kellogg MBA/MMM Program
This interview is the latest in an Accepted.com blog series featuringà interviews with current MBA students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look atà top MBA programs. And now for a chat with Shriansh Shrivastava, a student at Northwestern Kelloggââ¬â¢s joint MBA/Masters in Design Innovation program. Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad? What was your most recent job? Where are you currently studying? Shriansh: I grew up in India, then moved to the UK for undergrad in electronics and communications at the University of Sussex. After graduation, I worked at Ericsson UK, working with mobile phones and broadband, and also worked in the Ericsson Innovation Scheme. After this, I moved to Canada to work with mobile phone innovations in suicide prevention. Iââ¬â¢m currently attending the Kellogg School of Management, due to graduate in June 2016. Accepted: Can you tell us more about your joint degree? What do you plan on doing with your degrees? Shriansh: The MMM program at Kellogg has to be the best kept secret in the MBA world. Itââ¬â¢s a joint program ââ¬â you end up with a Kellogg MBA and a Master in Science in Design Innovation from the McCormick/Segal schools at Northwestern. The biggest misconception about the MMM is that itââ¬â¢s an ââ¬Ëengineering-yââ¬â¢ program. Not true. Around 50% of my class is from a completely non-technical background! My MS:DI degree is teaching me design thinking: how to approach any problem creatively and differently. So skills Iââ¬â¢m going to end up with will be a very creative spin on an already great MBA program. This fits best with my current objective of getting involved with innovation in big tech post graduation. Accepted: How are you liking Chicago? Do you plan on staying local after you receive your degrees? Any ideas yet where you may be headed? Shriansh: Chicagoââ¬â¢s brilliant. Weââ¬â¢re based in Evanston, which is about 20 minutes north of Chicago by the Metra. Evanstonââ¬â¢s very self-sufficient, so I actually donââ¬â¢t end up going to Chicago all that much. But itââ¬â¢s an awesome city, of course. The architecture is amazing, the cultureââ¬â¢s friendly and the food is awesome. And itââ¬â¢s cold. Very cold. Having spent the last year in Canada, Iââ¬â¢m actually comfortable with the weather so far, but my peers from tropical parts of the world areâ⬠¦having fun! Accepted: Do you have a favorite coffee shop or another nice place where you like to study or hang out with friends?à Shriansh: We MMMs have our very own exclusive lounge, which is a modern space, well lit, with some sort of creativity always going on. I love hanging out here with my peers. There are actual coffee shops and breakout rooms around campus, of course, but this is the best place to be at, at least for me. Accepted: Why did you choose Kellogg? Which other programs had you considered? How would you say that youre a good fit for Kelloggs program? Shriansh: For me, it came down to Haas or Kellogg ââ¬â what both have in common is the extremely cooperative, friendly spirit. Kellogg really embodies this ââ¬â from day #1, we were thrown into tons of group work ââ¬â at this time, Iââ¬â¢ve completed 9 courses, each with its own team, and have done more coursework in groups than individually. Also a brilliant example: For recruiting, a bunch of us work together on making each other better ââ¬â we all know weââ¬â¢ll be gunning for the same job, but that ââ¬Ëcompetitionââ¬â¢ is just not in the picture. For me, itââ¬â¢s important that my peers do well ââ¬â and vice versa. This lack of any sort of animosity actually makes Kellogg, Kellogg. Accepted: If you could change one thing about the program, what would it be?à Shriansh: Iââ¬â¢d move it to someplace warmerâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢ve heard Hawaii is nice this time of the yearâ⬠¦ Accepted: Whats your favorite class so far? Shriansh: Iââ¬â¢d like to say Operations, with Professor Chopra. Itââ¬â¢s not my favorite, but itââ¬â¢s the one thatââ¬â¢s blown my mind the most. I enjoyed Marketing, really enjoyed Research-Design-Build, and Strategy. But ops is a different beast, and portrays concepts you learn in Marketing in a completely different light (e.g. Selling more can end up ruining your business!!). Accepted: Can you share your top 3 admissions tips with our readers? Shriansh: 1. In essays and interviews, be clear why you want the second degree and tie it to your goals. If it brings you new skills, say that. If you have the skills and want to practice them in the real world, say so. 2. Saying ââ¬Ëwhat people might want to hearââ¬â¢ rather than whatââ¬â¢s real will get you into trouble. An interview is a ââ¬Ëpersonality fitââ¬â¢ test as much as a competence test. If you fake it, you might even end up in a program, but probably will end up around the type of people you donââ¬â¢t gel with, instantly diluting the value of the MBA. 3. Network, network, network ââ¬â talk to alumni ââ¬â LinkedIn is a great resource for this. When I was applying, I spoke to a lot of alums. All Kellogg alums I reached out to were happy to help, which actually factored a lot into my decision. When approaching an alumni or current student, do ask precise and intelligent question. Asking someone ââ¬Å"So tell me what Kellogg doesâ⬠is horribly vague and will probably irritate the person. A better question could be ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m interested in photography. What do you think the photography club on campus is like? Did you go to events? For one-on-one guidance on your b-school application, please see our MBA Application Packages.à You can read more about Shrianshââ¬â¢s journey by checking out his About Me page. Thank you Shriansh for sharing your story with us ââ¬â we wish you loads of luck! What Do Iagos Two Soliloquies Tell Us (the Audience)...
Iagos intentions and motives for the malicious and evil acts he performs can be fully realized when he reads his soliloquies to the audience. It gives Iago the chance to be completely honest for once and provides the irony when the audience knows Iagos plans but the other characters are unaware and call him ÃâHonest Iago. In Iagos soliloquy in Act 1 Scene 3, Iago exclaims I hate the Moor; he repeats this sentence many times during the first act of the play. The reasons for his hatred are vast, they could stem from racism, for Iago uses derogatory terms to describe Othello many times, ÃâBarbary horse, Ãâdevil and Ãâold black ram. It could also come from Iagos resentment that Cassio was promoted above him by Othello. One of the mainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Iago has many reasons to be Jealous of Michael Cassio, he is described as the perfect soldier throughout the book, and not only is Iago furious that Cassio was promoted to lieutenant first, but Iago suspects him, as well as Othello, of having an affair with his wife, For I fear Cassio with my night-cap too Ãâ"Iago, again, has no basis for this belief, but his character is obviously extremely possessive, and with all his trickery he has reason to suspect anyone of foul play. Iagos intentions are clarified somewhat during his ending soliloquy in Act 2 scene 1, Now, I do love her [Desdemona] too; not out of absolute lustÃâ¦but partly led to diet my revenge. Iago is saying that he is sexually attracted to Desdemona but that it is not because of lust, but because of the hatred he has towards Othello and the need he feels to have revenge upon him. He feels that if he was to sleep with Othellos Desdemona than he and Othello would be even, And nothing can or shall content my soul till I am evend with him, wife for wife Iagos jealousy is so strong that he desperately wants for Othello to experience it, Or failing so, yet that I put the Moor at least into a jealousy so strong that judgment cannot cure. Iagos need for revenge on Cassio and Othello could originate from the inadequacy he must of felt when Cassio was promoted, and finding out that his wife might be having affairs must have wounded his pride and bruised his ego greatly. Roles of Important Women During the Civil War Essay
Women played an important role during the American Civil War but it wasnt until 100 years afterwards that they received recognition. Even today history books skip over the important roles women had during the Civil War. Wives, mothers, daughters, and grandmothers impacted the War both at home and on the battlefield. Their lives changed in many ways with the onset of the Civil War. Women took on many different roles that helped their side during the Civil War. Born on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts, Clarissa Harlow Barton was educated at home and began teaching at the age of 15 ( Pryor).
